Description

Depicting the final emotional decision of the game, Fate of the Canvas is my love letter to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Verso is my favorite character in any recent media, expertly and tragically written, with such a heart-wrenching backstory and beautifully acted (by both mocap actor and voice actor), I needed him to be a major part of this piece. I adore his character design, and especially the “pure” white and gold outfit being one of my favorites for him from the game, it was the obvious choice for me when designing this work.

I also knew I needed to reference the incredible environment where this scene takes place with that red swirling eclipse and there’s no better way for me to do that than with marbled paper. A staple in my work for years, I knew the technique would be perfect for this piece. Maelle in her “real” outfit and iconic white hair from Act III felt like the perfect imagery for the main focal point in the center of the red circle, and the soul fragment boy rounds out the piece. All of them contain shading done with “French Grey” markers, which made me laugh a bit, this being a French video game and all.

The red marble paper is the bottom-most layer, the characters and blue swirls are the middle layer, and the red flower petals are a separate top layer, each one individually cut out and glued on. This work was such a labor of love, and I’m so thrilled with the way it turned out! I’m very excited to continue to create fanart for this game, it has truly impacted my life, and I’ll never get tired of talking about it!

Originally created over the course of 70 hours with pen, marker, colored pencil, paint pen, marble paper, and bristol board with cutout effects.

Exclusively available as a large 11×17″ print.
