Church Grim
$12.00 – $30.00
Custodian and protector of consecrated ground.
Description
To quote secondlina on Instagram, “In English and Nordic folklore, it was believed that the first person buried in a new churchyard had to guard it against all ills, from grave-robbing vandals to the Devil himself. To prevent a human soul from having to perform such a duty, a black dog was buried as a substitute.”
I found a simple arch-shaped picture frame and fell in love with the shape so much! I wanted to create an image specifically for it, and with the shape reminding me of a tombstone, the Church Grim is the perfect subject for it.
Originally created with pen, marker, gel pen, and watercolor pencils on toned grey paper cut to an arch shape. These prints however, are rectangular with a white edge to feature the intended shape.
